Climate Resilience & Nature-Based Solutions

Adaptation has moved from afterthought to core mandate. The EU Adaptation Strategy and the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change push cities to assess risk systematically — Climate-ADAPT hosts the shared platform — while the Nature Restoration Law and the EU Biodiversity Strategy frame the ecological response. Heatwaves, urban flooding and prolonged droughts are now annual operating conditions for most European cities.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) — green roofs, urban forests, sponge-city design, river renaturalisation — combine adaptation, biodiversity and quality-of-life outcomes. Networks like ICLEI Europe, Eurocities, the URBACT Resilient Europe network, and EU-funded projects (Connecting Nature, REGREEN, GoGreenRoutes) accelerate replication; the European Environment Agency keeps the evidence base.
