The Story behind the Smart City Hub

Cities across Europe are grappling with an unprecedented set of challenges — from climate adaptation and energy resilience to housing affordability and digital inclusion. Yet the tools and knowledge to address these challenges often remain siloed within individual municipalities, disconnected from the innovators and networks that could accelerate meaningful progress. It was precisely this gap that led Urban Impact, Europe's leading urban tech advisory and ecosystem connector, to initiate the Smart City Hub as a pan-European project.

Urban Impact has spent years operating at the intersection of urban tech startups, investors, and public and private city stakeholders — connecting, advising, and educating around the impact of new technologies in cities. With over 60 projects delivered, more than 100 founders supported, and €32.3 million in funding helped raise, the agency had built a unique vantage point from which to observe a growing structural problem: while individual cities were making strides in urban innovation, there was no shared, cross-border infrastructure for exchanging knowledge, pooling resources, and co-developing solutions at a European scale.

The direct catalyst for the Smart City Hub came from Berlin. For years, the city's SmartCity platform had served as a vital meeting point for startups, civil society, city administration, and forward-thinking businesses. When public funding for this platform was discontinued, a significant void emerged — not only for Berlin's innovation ecosystem, but for the broader network of European cities that had looked to it as a reference model. Rather than accepting that loss, Urban Impact recognised an opportunity to reimagine the concept on a far more ambitious scale: a pan-European platform that would connect cities, innovators, and stakeholders across borders.

Central to this vision was the conviction that artificial intelligence could serve as a transformative lever. Urban Impact saw that AI had matured to the point where it could fundamentally reshape how urban networks are built and maintained. From intelligent matchmaking between cities and startups, to automated knowledge curation and multilingual content exchange, AI offered the means to overcome the very barriers — language, geography, institutional fragmentation — that had long prevented effective cross-city collaboration. By embedding AI at the core of the Smart City Hub, Urban Impact set out to create a platform where knowledge flows freely, best practices surface automatically, and stakeholders across the continent can find one another with unprecedented ease.

The Smart City Hub is therefore not merely a digital platform; it is an expression of Urban Impact's broader mission to build novel alliances that drive real-world change. It translates the agency's deep expertise in ecosystem building into a scalable, technology-driven infrastructure designed for the realities of twenty-first-century urban governance.
