Digitalising Berlin's electricity distribution network forms the core of Stromnetz Berlin's ambitious smart grid programme. This initiative addresses the challenges of integrating increasing volumes of decentralised renewable energy sources, such as rooftop solar panels, along with battery storage systems and the rising demand from electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Employing a network of advanced sensors and AI-powered load management systems, the programme aims to optimise the balance between electricity supply and demand across the city's vast network of 36,000 kilometres of underground cables in real time.
Critical to the project's success is the widespread rollout of smart meters, offering households access to detailed, granular data regarding their energy consumption patterns. This granular data underpins the implementation of dynamic pricing models and demand response programmes, enabling consumers to adjust their energy usage in response to grid conditions. By empowering citizens to actively participate in grid management, the project stabilises the network, particularly during peak demand periods.
