Smart Urban Farming Stadtfarm is a Berlin-based urban agriculture project that combines modern aquaponic farming technology with smart city principles to produce fresh fish and vegetables sustainably within the city limits. Located in the Lichtenberg district, the Stadtfarm operates a commercial-scale aquaponic system where tilapia fish and a variety of vegetables, herbs, and salad greens are cultivated in an integrated closed-loop system. Nutrient-rich water from the fish tanks naturally fertilises the hydroponic plant beds, while the plants purify the water before it returns to the fish — a symbiotic cycle that eliminates the need for synthetic fertilisers and reduces water consumption by up to 90 per cent compared to conventional agriculture. The Stadtfarm's smart farming infrastructure incorporates IoT sensors that continuously monitor water quality parameters, temperature, pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations, feeding data into automated control systems that optimise growing conditions in real time. This technology-driven approach ensures consistent, high-quality production year-round regardless of outdoor weather conditions. The farm supplies its produce to local restaurants, markets, and direct consumers, minimising food miles and strengthening Berlin's local food economy. Beyond commercial production, the Stadtfarm serves as an educational platform, offering guided tours, workshops, and school programmes that teach visitors about sustainable food production, circular resource management, and the potential of urban agriculture to contribute to food security and environmental sustainability. The project aligns with Berlin's smart city strategy by demonstrating how technology-enabled agriculture can be integrated into urban environments, contributing to the city's circular economy goals and climate resilience. As a scalable model for urban food production, the Stadtfarm inspires similar initiatives across Germany and Europe.
