LED-Laufsteg — Innovative Straßenbeleuchtung zum Anfassen (LED Catwalk — Touchable Innovative Street Lighting) is a Berlin smart city project that creates a public demonstration walkway showcasing different advanced LED street lighting technologies for citizens, planners, and decision-makers to experience first-hand. The installation presents a range of modern street lighting solutions side by side, allowing visitors to compare different luminaire designs, colour temperatures, dimming capabilities, light distribution patterns, and smart control systems in realistic outdoor conditions. This hands-on approach to technology demonstration addresses a common challenge in urban infrastructure planning: technical specifications and laboratory measurements often fail to convey the real-world experience of different lighting solutions to non-expert stakeholders. By enabling citizens and municipal decision-makers to walk through and compare different lighting configurations in an actual street environment, the LED-Laufsteg supports more informed and democratic decision-making about public lighting upgrades. The showcased technologies include motion-sensor activated lighting that brightens when pedestrians approach, tuneable white LED systems that adjust colour temperature throughout the night to support human circadian rhythms, dark-sky-friendly fixtures that minimise light pollution and protect urban biodiversity, and connected smart poles that integrate environmental sensors, Wi-Fi access points, and electric vehicle charging alongside their primary lighting function. The project connects to Berlin's broader LED street lighting modernisation programme, which aims to convert the city's approximately 200,000 street lights to energy-efficient, intelligent LED systems. It aligns with Berlin's Gemeinsam Digital smart city strategy and its climate action targets, demonstrating how public lighting infrastructure can simultaneously improve safety, reduce energy consumption, enhance urban quality of life, and serve as a platform for additional smart city services.
