Kiezlabor is Berlin's mobile urban innovation lab, created as part of the Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin smart city and digital strategy. Implemented by CityLAB Berlin (a project of Technologiestiftung Berlin) on behalf of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, the Kiezlabor has been touring Berlin's districts since summer 2023 under the motto "Without you, we're just a container."
The lab takes two physical forms: an energy self-sufficient tiny house converted from a former shipping container, and a compact cargo bike for lighter neighbourhood engagements. Solar panels allow the container to operate independently of local power infrastructure. Inside, modular seating, interactive exhibits, and modern presentation technology create a flexible space for workshops, exhibitions, discussions, and community networking. The setup supports both indoor and outdoor use.
At each location, the Kiezlabor functions as a temporary meeting place where citizens, local organisations, and district administration come together to address neighbourhood-specific challenges. Topics have included heat resilience, urban green spaces, circular economy, and the potential of digital transformation at the local level. Programming is developed in collaboration with local partners and tailored to each site. Locations are typically combined across phases, with the cargo bike used for initial neighbourhood outreach before the container arrives for a longer stay.
The project prioritises transparent communication and lasting outcomes. Documentation for each location is published and continuously updated. By bringing participatory formats directly into neighbourhoods, the Kiezlabor aims to make citizen engagement more accessible and to strengthen cooperation between urban society and Berlin's public administration through hands-on, location-based collaboration.
