Acting as a collaborative innovation hub, InfraLab Berlin unites key infrastructure providers in the German capital to forge digital solutions for a smarter, more sustainable urban environment. Major organisations such as Berliner Wasserbetriebe, Berliner Stadtwerke, BSR, BVG, Stromnetz Berlin, and Vattenfall Wärme work together within the lab to address pressing urban challenges related to digital infrastructure, energy, climate change, and overall sustainability. The focus is on harnessing technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor networks to optimise city operations and improve the quality of life for Berlin's residents.
One prominent project driven by InfraLab Berlin is the deployment of a city-wide LoRaWAN radio network. This initiative aims to establish a robust infrastructure for IoT data transmission, enabling a wide range of smart city applications, from environmental monitoring to efficient waste management. With a small team of between two and ten employees, InfraLab Berlin demonstrates how focused collaboration between local stakeholders can yield significant advancements in digital urban innovation. This model offers valuable lessons for other European cities striving to develop and implement smart city solutions, showcasing the power of shared resources and expertise in achieving common goals.
