BIFOLD, the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data, is one of Germany's leading AI research centres, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as a national competence centre for artificial intelligence. It was established in 2020 through the merger of two Berlin-based AI centres: the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and the Berlin Center for Machine Learning (BZML), both hosted at Technische Universität Berlin.
BIFOLD conducts foundational research at the intersection of Big Data Management and Machine Learning, with the explicit goal of advancing AI application development and maximising its impact on science, industry, and society. The institute's research covers scalable data processing, neural network optimisation, automated machine learning, responsible AI, and the efficient management of large heterogeneous datasets. Its work supports applications ranging from medical imaging and climate science to industrial analytics and urban computing.
With a staff of over 200 researchers from more than 30 countries, BIFOLD operates as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, connecting TU Berlin with Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität, the Max Planck Institute, and the Fraunhofer Society. The institute plays a central role in Berlin's emerging position as a top-three European city for frontier AI research, home to over 9,000 AI professionals.
For smart cities, BIFOLD's research underpins urban AI applications in areas such as predictive infrastructure maintenance, mobility optimisation, energy grid management, and intelligent environmental monitoring — providing the foundational machine learning capabilities that Berlin's smart city projects increasingly rely on.
