A next-generation contactless smart ticketing system is revolutionising public transport in Catalonia. This initiative, known as T-mobilitat, is replacing traditional paper-based travel cards with a modern, integrated solution across Barcelona's extensive metro, bus, tram, and commuter rail networks. Account-based ticketing is enabled through the use of NFC cards and mobile phones, streamlining the payment process for commuters.
A key feature of T-mobilitat is its automatic fare capping mechanism. This ensures passengers are always charged the lowest available fare for their journeys, regardless of travel patterns, promoting affordability and encouraging greater public transport usage. Furthermore, the system generates valuable real-time passenger flow data. This data is leveraged by Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) to optimise service frequency and capacity across the entire network, leading to improved efficiency and a better passenger experience. The rollout of T-mobilitat is a significant step towards a more sustainable and user-friendly urban mobility ecosystem, providing a model for other European cities seeking to modernise their public transport infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of their networks.
