Overview of Smart Citizen Kit
The Smart Citizen Kit is an open-source environmental sensor initiative developed by Fab Lab Barcelona at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). The kit also assesses noise levels in decibels (dBA) using a MEMS microphone, along with standard meteorological parameters such as temperature and humidity, light intensity in lux, and barometric pressure. The kit connects via Wi-Fi, supports local SD card storage, and can be powered by USB or solar panels, all housed in a weather-resistant enclosure designed for 3D printing.
The Smart Citizen Platform
Data collected from the Smart Citizen Kit is aggregated on the Smart Citizen website. This platform features an interactive map that provides a global view of all registered sensors, time-series charts for data visualization, and options for data download in CSV and JSON formats. Additionally, the platform offers RESTful API access for integration and community features that facilitate groups and coordinated measurement campaigns.
Citizen Science Methodology
The Smart Citizen project actively involves communities at all stages, including training and onboarding workshops, collaborative measurement campaigns, and data interpretation support.
