Seestadt Aspern is a major urban development project in Vienna, Austria, transforming a former airfield into a vibrant new district. Spanning 240 hectares, it aims to house 25,000 residents and provide 20,000 workplaces by 2030, centred around an artificial lake and featuring sustainable infrastructure including geothermal energy, solar panels, and extensive green spaces.
The project embodies Vienna's renowned social housing model. A key example is the D12 housing block, completed in 2015, offering 213 apartments and community facilities. Developed by housing cooperative EBG and designed by Berger + Parkkinen Architekten and Querkraft Architekten, the timber-clad complex promotes social interaction through shared courtyards and graduated public-to-private zones.
Other notable developments include high-rises by Zechner & Zechner, F+P Architekten, and Klammer Zeleny. Urban planning by Gehl and Sweco prioritises livability with public spaces, schools, and innovation hubs. The embedded Aspern Smart City Research (ASCR) programme tests smart grid technologies and data-driven energy management in real-world conditions. Currently home to over 11,000 residents, Seestadt Aspern serves as a global model for sustainable, people-oriented smart urban growth.
