The Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) is the world's largest and most influential annual event dedicated to smart city technologies, urban innovation, and sustainable development. Organised by Fira de Barcelona, the congress takes place each November in Barcelona, attracting over 25,000 attendees from more than 140 countries. Since its founding in 2011, SCEWC has established itself as the premier global meeting point for city leaders, urban planners, technology companies, researchers, startups, and civil society organisations.
The event combines a large-scale exhibition with over 1,100 exhibiting companies and cities, a congress programme featuring 400+ speakers across multiple stages, and co-located events reinforcing key areas of action. Thematic areas span enabling technologies, energy and environment, mobility, governance, living and inclusion, infrastructure and building, and the blue economy. The congress also hosts the annual World Smart City Awards, recognising game-changing projects that make cities better places to live.
SCEWC has expanded beyond Barcelona through regional editions including Smart City Expo Latam Congress in Mexico, Smart City Expo Curitiba in Brazil, Smart City Expo Doha in Qatar, and Smart City Expo Atlanta in the USA. The organisation also operates Tomorrow.City, described as the world's biggest digital platform devoted to creating and sharing content about cities and innovation.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for 3–5 November in Barcelona. Over its history, the congress has evolved from an early focus on technology infrastructure and IoT to a broader agenda encompassing climate action, digital inclusion, urban resilience, housing affordability, and AI ethics in urban contexts.
